After spending 4 holidays in Greece we decided to make a page with some general knowledge about Greece.
The easiest way to come to Greece is by airplane - there are flights available from every European capital. The other way is arriving by car, but it takes a lot of time.
Greece is an EUROCountry. EC-cash-stations can be found in nearly every tourist town.
Due to the southern European mentality the Greece use a rough way to drive. Taxi drivers like to show fresh-arrived tourists as fast they are able to drive (also bus-drivers). As a pedestrian you should take extremly care, don't rely on green traffic lights!
Don't try to travel by train, there is only one main track (Athens - Saloniki) and a few small tracks (Peleponnes). Normally you can use taxis and busses, their prices are low (80 km by bus - 6 EUR). The bus routes you can check at the KTEL-page. On motorways you have to pay tolls.
The costs in Greece are nearly the same as in the rest-EU. Fruits, vegetables and lunch in tavernas are cheap, clothes, ice and refreshments are as expensive as in Germany. It is usual to close the shops from 13 to 16 o'clock (Siesta), but many shops are open on saturday and sunday.
As refreshments you usually get Coca-Cola-ware (like Sprite, Coke, Fanta) and Tuborg Soda. Of course you can drink beer (Heineken or Amstel), but the Greek vines are delicous! For your stomach you should take an Ouzu after lunch. Eat as many fruits as you can, its cheap and tasty.
The Greek cuisine has many faces. Here are some dishes:Of course you also can eat all kinds of steak and fish (grilled octopus, sardines, codfish), but fish is expensive here Besides you get pizza in every town, sometimes you can eat Chinese food, too
Zaziki (Tsatsiki) Yoghurt with cucumber and much garlic Dolmades vine leaves filled with minced meat and fine sauce Pita Gyros the Greek Kebap, with tomato, french fries, salad and tstatsiki Souvlaki grilled meat-spit Giuvetsi meat of lamb with ricenoddles and fine sauce, sometimes baked with cheese - my favourite dish Stifado goulash with small onions Moussaka souffle with aubergines, minced meat, noodles and cheese Pastitio the same as Moussaka, but without aubergines
The Greek people are Greek-orthodox. Everywhere there are small churches. But take care on the basic rules: no open-hearted clothes when you visit them!
