In July 1998 we flew to Nikiti for 2 weeks. This is a village on the peninsula Sithonia, which belongs to the large peninsula Chalkidiki (northeast Greece).
When we arrived at Thessaloniki airport at 22:00 it was 32 Grad Celsius hot - so it promised to be a hot holiday. The weather stayed so - no rain and no temperature below 30 °C.
Nikiti is something for people who don't need party - there are some tavernas and small supermarkets, but no disco. There is no building with more than 3 floors. Many inhabitants speek some words English or German.
It was easy to go by bus, every hour to Thessaloniki (2 hours) or to Neos Marmaras (about 20 minutes), the next town with many shops - a tourist town.

Trips:

Thessaloniki:

- secondlarge City of Greece
- good for shopping and interestings in archeology

Dion:

- ruins of an antic greek town
- take something against the sun with you, there is no shadow

Meteora

- monasteries on high rocks, some are open to visit
- long arrival, but
- you have to see it !!

Food:

The best ice is available at Alexandros at the beachpromenade. For fans of the greek cuisine we recommend the taverna at the harbour with the wine (sorry I have lost the name).

Exchange:

There is a post office on the street from harbour to old Nikiti, it is faster than at the Nationalbank across (there is also a EC-automat).

Busses/Traffic:

Town busses are cheap. Don't rely to the schedule, +- 15 minutes are usual.
The touristbusdrivers don't consider on speed limits, on our tour from airport to hotel we overrided 6 not slow-driving cars.
Helmets are only worn by tourists.

Beach:

long, empty sandbeach, but somewhere there are animals in water (watch, where the natives don't swim)

Hotel:

We were lodged in Hotel Lilly Ann Village, which is well equiped (Sat-TV, refrigerator and air-condition inclusive). The cuisine was well, too.

Summary:

We recommend Nikiti for people who don't need discos.
